Many of us find it difficult to meditate because our minds are always busy thinking of all the things we have to do. Making a crystal Mandala can help to clear your mind and prepare you for meditation.
The word Mandala comes from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit, it can be loosely translated to mean "circle". A Mandala represents wholeness. Meditating on a Mandala helps you to centre your mind and body and encourages you to heal from within, from your centre outwards.
In addition the process of arranging tumble stones in a Mandala pattern forces you to concentrate on a task and helps to clear unnecessary thoughts from your mind and, while you are working with the crystals, you will be receiving their healing energies and vibrations.
Write down all the chores that keep popping into your mind when you try to meditate and then put the paper to one side. Tell yourself that these chores will get done in time but that this time is for you.
Layout your tumbles or chips in a pattern on the floor or table. Start off by making an inner circle of tumbles or chips. They don’t have to be all the same type of crystal, they can be different types of tumble stones.
Then make an outer circle of tumbles.
Then fill in the Mandala using a pattern of crystals. There is no set design it can be any pattern that pleases you. The act of placing your tumbles out in a pattern helps to clear your mind and prepares you for meditation.
You can make your patterns as simple or as complicated as you like.
Close your eyes and breath in slowly. Imagine you are breathing in light. Hold for the count of 4 and then breath out slowly, breathing out tension and stress.
Repeat this twice more.
Open your eyes and look at your Mandala. Look at the shapes, the depth the texture and the colour. Your eyes may become unfocused and the pattern may seem to move about or swirl but don’t try to analyse what you see just relax. Remain looking at your Mandala for as long as you feel comfortable.
Close your eyes and think about any images that may have come to you while you were looking at the Mandala. Think about how you feel emotionally and physically. Let the thoughts come into your mind and then float away.
When you are ready bring your focus back to your surroundings and open your eyes.
Hold a black stone, such as Haematite, Black Tourmaline or Black Obsidian, for 5 minutes to help to ground you and prevent you from feeling fuzzy headed. Have a drink of water.
You should now feel refreshed and ready for anything.
(This mandala is an expansion of an idea mentioned in July Hall's book 'The Illustrated Guide to Crystals')
